We teach ourselves to move. Most other mammals can do a majority of things they need to do for their whole lives within minutes of being born - we take quite a while to construct our movements, baby step by baby step BUT we don't finish the job! We teach ourselves enough to get by, but we don't refine our body's map. Beyond that, as we grow and change we need to keep updating our body's map!
One of the cool things about the lips is that our brain knows a lot about them. We used them A LOT as infants! Not just for feeding, but also learning, so we know them better than we know a lot of other parts of our voice!
Using the lips as a gateway to deeper regions of the instrument can relieve tension through the whole instrument, from local to more global regions of the body.
